Carnivore Keto Flu: Why You Feel Awful in Week One (And How I Fixed It)

Day three, I almost quit.
I was lying on the couch at 2 in the afternoon with a headache that felt like a tight hat two sizes too small. My legs were heavy. My brain was foggy. My patience was gone β ask my kids.
I remember thinking: This is supposed to make me feel better?
It did.
But not that week.
What I didn’t know then is that almost everything I was feeling had a name, a reason β and a fix that cost less than a cup of coffee.
What Is “Keto Flu”?
“Keto flu” isn’t actually the flu. It’s a nickname for the rough patch many people feel when they cut carbs dramatically β which carnivore does overnight.
Common symptoms include:
- Headaches
- Fatigue and low energy
- Brain fog
- Irritability
- Muscle cramps
- Trouble sleeping
- Feeling lightheaded when you stand up
For most people, it shows up in the first few days and fades within one to two weeks.
The good news? A lot of it is preventable.
Why It Happens
Here’s the simple version.
When you eat a lot of carbohydrates, your body holds onto extra water. When carbs drop, insulin drops β and your kidneys start releasing that water.
And when water leaves, it takes minerals with it.
Sodium. Potassium. Magnesium.
Those minerals help your nerves fire, your muscles contract, and your heart keep a steady rhythm. When they get low, you feel it β in your head, your legs, and your mood.
At the same time, your body is learning to run on fat instead of sugar. That switch takes a little time.
So you’re short on minerals and in the middle of a fuel change.
No wonder it feels rough.
The Reframe Nobody Told Me
I thought keto flu meant carnivore wasn’t working.
It’s the opposite.
It means your body is changing. You’re coming off a lifetime of sugar-based fuel. Of course there’s an adjustment.
The goal isn’t to “push through” with gritted teeth. The goal is to support your body while it adapts.
That’s a very different mindset β and a much more pleasant week.

What Fixed It for Me
1. Salt β more than you think.
This was the big one. I started salting my meat heavily and adding a pinch of salt to water a couple of times a day. My headache eased noticeably within an hour.
Many carnivore eaters find they need noticeably more sodium than they did before, especially early on. If you have high blood pressure, kidney issues or a heart condition, talk with your doctor before increasing salt.
2. Water β but not too much.
Drink when you’re thirsty. Chugging gallons of plain water can actually flush out more minerals. Water plus salt works better than water alone.
3. More fat.
Low energy in week one is often a fuel problem. I switched to fattier cuts β ribeye, 80/20 ground beef, eggs fried in butter β and my afternoons stopped falling apart.
4. Electrolytes.
Some people use a sugar-free electrolyte mix with sodium, potassium, and magnesium. It’s not required, but it can make the first two weeks much easier.
5. Rest.
This is not the week to start a brutal new workout routine. Walk. Stretch. Sleep. Let your body do its work.
How Long Does It Last?
For most people:
Days 1β3: You feel great β or you feel the first dip.
Days 3β7: The rough patch, if you get one.
Weeks 2β4: Energy starts to steady. Cravings fade. Sleep often improves.
Everybody’s different. Some people barely notice anything. Others need a bit longer, especially if they came from a very high-sugar diet.
Mistakes That Make It Worse
I made most of these. Learn from me.
Going low-fat. Lean meat plus no carbs equals very little fuel. Your body needs fat now.
Skipping meals to “speed it up.” Under-eating during the transition makes symptoms worse. Eat when you’re hungry, and eat enough.
Drinking too much coffee. Caffeine can make headaches and jitters stronger while your minerals are low.
Cheating “just a little.” A few bites of bread or a soda can drag the adjustment out and bring the symptoms back. Commit for at least the first two weeks.
Comparing yourself to others. Your neighbor might feel great on day two. You might need ten. Neither one is wrong.
When to Call Your Doctor
Keto flu should feel like a bad few days β not an emergency.
Get medical help if you have chest pain, a racing or irregular heartbeat, fainting, severe dizziness, confusion, or symptoms that keep getting worse instead of better.
And if you take medication for diabetes or blood pressure, talk to your doctor before starting carnivore. Cutting carbs can change how those medications work.
My Simple Week-One Checklist
Salt every meal.
Drink water when thirsty, with a pinch of salt.
Choose fatty cuts.
Sleep more than usual.
Don’t quit on day three.
That last one matters most.
Because day three was the worst day of my first carnivore month.
Day ten was one of the best.
The fog lifted. The headaches stopped. And for the first time in years, I didn’t need a 3 p.m. nap to survive the afternoon.
Hang in there. It’s worth it.
